Resource Guide to Canadian Genealogy
Resource Guide to Canadian Genealogy
Do you have any Canadian genealogy in your family history? Many people do, especially in North America and the United Kingdom. Being on the same continent, quite a bit of travel and immigration between the United States and Canada, and even Mexico and Canada has taken place over the centuries since European colonization began. There is also much travel between the UK and Canada, especially in the past century, as Canada is technically part of the British Commonwealth, and the British monarch is head of state there. Even one of Queen Elizabeth II’s granddaughters lives in Canada with her husband and child. There has also been a smaller amount of mixing between France and Canada, particularly in the French-speaking province of Quebec. Also, French fur trappers and traders were among the first Europeans to spend lengthy periods of time each year in North America, before colonization, and they largely camped in what is now Canada; this also made them among the first to marry into Native families and to learn Native languages...

Timelines and Your Family Tree
Timelines and Your Family Tree
Ancestry.com has rolled out a whole new look in its online family trees. If you haven’t seen it yet, it is worth exploring. You can always switch back to the old version if you don’t like it. It’s an enormously helpful tool for understanding the times your ancestor lived in, how those times may have shaped who they were, and provides a good research tool if you are writing a biography or larger family history...

Wills Galore! Using the New U.S. Wills Collection
Ancestry.com released a collection of millions of wills from around the nation going back to the 1700’s and up through the 1990’s. This is a really amazing collection, because it includes wills that have never been published online prior to this. In the past, you would have had to travel to the courthouse where the will you were seeking was located and search for it in person, or see if the court staff would do a search by phone for you (which often came with a hefty fee for the use of the court’s time in searching for you for a will that may or may not exist). Now, with this new collection, you can discover many new and interesting wills for your family without having to leave home to do it...

A Primer in the History and Use of HDR Photography
Photography is the art form of painting with light, which means that it was only natural that someone would invent the flash, enabling us to paint with light even where there was none. Let me show you how today’s wonderful world of artificial lighting came about.
