Hi Friends,
Another Friday is here, and this week I’m thinking about family history in a very personal way.
A couple of weeks ago, my mother had a stroke that affected her speech. She’s doing better, and we’re thankful for that. She’s able to talk more, recognize pictures, and remember people in the photos I’ve shown her. I printed a photo album for her and labeled everyone in it, so I can hand her one picture at a time and let her hold it, study it, and connect with it.
She still has a hard time getting the words out. I can tell the words are there, but she can’t always say them, and I can see how frustrating that is for her. Still, those pictures are helping. They’re opening little doors back to names, faces, memories, and family.
It reminded me again that genealogy isn’t only about records, dates, and documents. It’s about people. It’s about the stories still living in the hearts and minds of those we love. This weekend might be a good time to visit someone in your family, ask questions, share pictures, or just sit and listen. If those older loved ones are no longer here, you can still honor them by researching their lives and preserving what you find.
Family history is precious because it connects what we have now with those who came before us. New babies come into our families, older generations pass on, and somewhere between those two points are the stories we’re trying to save.
