Hi Friends,
I hope your week has been a good one and you’ve had some time to dig into your family history, even if it was just a few minutes here and there. I’ve
got a few new things for you this week, and I think they’re going to be useful in your research.
I’m starting a new series this week on U.S. census records. I want to help you understand what each census era was designed to collect, what changed over time, and how to pull solid family clues from it.
Part 1 is out today, and it starts before 1790. It covers the earlier “census-like” records that can fill gaps when the federal census has not yet been conducted.
Next week, you’ll get Part 2, covering 1790 to 1840 and what changed in those early federal counts, and Part 3, covering the big shift in 1850 when the census became person-by-person.
Also, this week, I posted a new article on whether genealogy is worth it if everyone forgets you, I updated this week’s free genealogy lookups, and I announced the latest giveaway winner.
Thanks for being here and for letting me be a small part of your genealogy work. I’m glad we get to do this together.
Happy Searching!
