Photography and Personal Growth
|
|
When you get right down to it, creative endeavors really are all about personal growth. And since that’s kind of a nebulous statement, let me talk a little bit about what personal growth is!
Personal growth can mean lots of things. For many of us, it means self-exploration. It gives us a chance to dig into our own minds and learn more about our creative sides. That’s an important part of creativity—examining and learning what it is that inspires us and motivates us to create. Once we’ve learned enough about our own creativity, we can learn to tap into it or trigger it at will so that we can create as the need or opportunity arises.
But there’s more to it than that. Personal growth can also mean pushing past your limits. Setting ambitious goals for yourself and your photographic accomplishments. Learning new things to build on your repertoire of skills.
At the end of the day, personal growth is all about discovering something new—something about yourself, a capability you didn’t have before or something more than that. Let’s take a little time to examine some of these areas of growth a little more deeply...

Make Photographs Transparent
|
|
We photographers spend a big portion of our time analyzing and re-analyzing what it takes to create a photograph that will be enjoyed by a wide audience. The fact is, anyone can create a photograph, but not everyone can create an image that captures the minds and hearts of the people who see it. Sometimes, it helps to look at the methods we use to create meaningful images from all different perspectives. And that leads me to
today’s topic, which is transparency in photography.
Transparency is something of a buzzword these days — everyone wants companies, politicians and so forth to be open and upfront about things. That’s kind of the point I’m trying to make with the idea of transparency in images. Obviously, I don’t mean that we should make actual transparencies! To make a transparent image, that means we need to make an image that is clear to those who see it. They don’t have to dig to find meaning or emotion in it.
So how do we go about creating transparent images? There are lots of ways to go about it, and lots of things that we can do. Here are some of the basics that will help you get the things that you intend across to a broader audience...

The Dangers of Interrupting a Creative
|
|
“Whatcha doing?”
That’s all it takes. If you do any kind of creative work, then you know exactly what I’m talking about. It’s those interruptions that break into whatever it is that you happen to be in deep thought about, completely derailing a train of thought that you’ve spent minutes or hours building. Photographers, writers, even programmers — we all have our stories about interrupted trains of thought.
The hardest part of it is, the people responsible for the derails are all well-meaning. Most of the time, it’s a spouse, a child. If you’re at work, then it’s your friendly coworker just popping his or her head into your office to say hello. These people often utterly unaware of the time they’ve cost you with one little interruption...

Physical Wellness as it Relates to Creative Wellness
|
|
It’s a universal truth: In order to be at your creative best, you need to be at your physical best. It’s something that I’ve heard across so many mediums. Everyone from photographers to writers say that they’re more productive, more creative and more inspired when they’re feeling good. I’ve found that it’s true and I’ll bet that you have, too. When we don’t feel right, we just don’t get much done.
The hard part is, photography isn’t necessarily an athletic activity. Sure, there will be times when you’re roaming in forests or fields, lugging heavy gear bags around and all the rest. And there will be more times when you’re parked in the driver’s seat of your car, driving a long distance to get to your photography destination. You’ll spend hours and hours at your computer, hunched over whatever project you are in the midst of post-processing. You’ll spend
yet more hours on the internet, researching and learning. And there will also be offline learning, times when you’re sitting on the sofa, reading a book.
So there are periods of activity and periods where we’re relatively sedentary. From that standpoint, physical wellness can be a tough thing to achieve. But, it isn’t all about the exercise. That’s part of it, certainly, but there’s more to it than that if you want to be at your creative best. Let me lay out some of the things you can do to make sure your creative mind is working as it should...
