The Art of Waiting
One of the first things that every photographer learns is that photography is in large part, a waiting game. Oh, the things you’ll find yourself waiting for over the years! The perfect lighting, the right action, the ideal weather. You’ll have an idea for autumn photography in the spring and find yourself waiting for the seasons to change. You’ll be waiting to go on photography trips and waiting to save up money for that next new gadget or gizmo that belongs in your gear bag.

There is always something to wait for, which is why it is frustrating to hear that you should wait before you take a photograph. However, I’ll say it anyway! I think there is validity in waiting, that the act of waiting itself can become an art.

In other words, a photographer must look at a scene and analyze it not just for artistic value, composition, meaning and other factors but also for the different colors of light and where that light will fall or where light might angle so as to leave a shadow.

As you learn to see that light, it becomes vital to learn how you can manipulate it, with tools or without. To that end, I’d like to take a moment to talk about learning how to see light in all of its various forms, including artificial light and learning how you can put that light to work in any way you so desire...

Why Do We Make Photographs?

Why Do We Make Photographs?
What are our motivations for making photographs? If you ask around, among friends and neighbors, you’ll quickly find that many photographers harbor dreams of making money or becoming known for their art. But are those the right reasons for creating photographs?

I don’t think they are. Sure, a photographer of reasonable skill can make a living with photography, but will you make millions? The chances of that are very, very slim. Just as slim are the chances that a photographer will go on to become a household name.

That isn’t to say that you shouldn’t have dreams. But sometimes, it is better to think of photography as something other than a path to fame and fortune. Perhaps we should be making art for art’s sake, or maybe even to pay the bills, but not with the goal to become rich and famous. After all, such a pursuit can take a bit of the joy out of the art.

So, if not for fame and money, then why do we make photographs? There are many reasons, as I’ll outline below...
